South Korea, Japan and the United States Conduct Joint Military Exercises

(Belga) The United States, Japan and South Korea will co-host a new military exercise on Monday in the waters between the Korean peninsula and Japan. The South Korean navy advises that the countries want to improve their cooperation in response to the threat from North Korea.

On Monday, crew members of the three participating frigates will be subjected to a simulated ballistic missile launch as a provocation by North Korea, the South Korean navy spokesman said. The three countries already announced last week, following a consultation in Washington, that they would conduct more frequent such training, particularly in missile defense and anti-submarine warfare.

Already high tensions in the region have escalated further in recent weeks, in part due to the intercontinental missile North Korea fired on Thursday. Pyongyang threatened to carry out “more offensive actions” in response to previous joint military preparation by South Korea and the United States. North Korea called the exercise a “rehearsal for nuclear war”. (Belga)
